Repairing Tears and Rips near Seams

EQUIPMENT NEEDED:

– Scissors

– Alcohol Wipe

– Canopy Tape

– Stormsure Glue

STEP 1 – PREPARE THE KITE

– Make sure the kite is clean and dry.

– Trim any loose threads around the damaged area.

– Wipe the damaged area thoroughly with an alcohol wipe.

– Let the alcohol completely dry before applying a patch.

PROPER PREPARATION OF THE DAMAGED AREA BEFORE PROCEEDING IS IMPORTANT – OTHERWISE THE REPAIR WILL NOT HOLD.

STEP 2 – CUT CANOPY TAPE?TO SIZE

– 2 patches are required (one for each side) at least 2 cm bigger around all edges of the rip.

– Cut a piece of canopy tape from the roll about twice the length of the required patch.

– Fold the piece of tape in half, and?round the corners. ?Unfold the tape, and trim it in half along the fold line.

STEP 3 – APPLY THE PATCHES

– Remove the backing from one of the patches, and apply it starting from one end squeezing out any air-bubbles as you go.
As you apply the patch, make sure any of the kite design or directional lines on the canopy match up.
(and if it is a big or messy rip it can be a good idea to tack the canopy together using masking or cello-tape on the other side first, just remember to remove all of the tacking before the second patch is applied).

– Press firmly on the patch, from the middle out to the edges of the patch.

– Remove the backing from the other patch, and line it up with the patch on the other side of the kite.
(holding the canopy up to a light or against the sun can help to match the edges of the patches exactly)

– Press firmly on the patch, from the middle out to the edges of the patch.

– Apply some heat to the patches by gently rubbing your palms together over both sides of the patch.
Be careful not to rub too hard as this can lift the edges of the repair and the patch will come off, especially near the seams of the kite.

STEP 4?-?GLUE THE PATCH EDGES

-?The patch will have a tendency to lift or get sand under around the seams, stitching or uneven parts of the canopy. ?To minimise this edges of the patch will need to have glue applied within 5 cm of the uneven canopy areas.

– Make sure that the glue completely covers the edge of the patch in these areas.
To make a tidy job of the glue put some masking tape 0.5 cm either side of the edge of the patch before gluing, and then remove the tape before the glue sets.

– Allow the glue to dry for at least 10 hrs before using the kite. ?If possible, leave the glue to dry for 24 hrs as this is the length of time it takes to completely cure, even though the glue will be set after 10 hrs.
